With many Brits choosing to save money by spending holiday time at home instead of venturing overseas , the summer day trip is a school holiday saviour. With plenty of cost effective days out accessible by car but not always by public transport, new drivers have a wealth of day trip opportunities to explore across the UK. RED Driving School has created a list of five of the best summer day trips, perfect for new drivers.

1) Lindisfarne castle, Northumberland

Located on the remote Holy Island off the coast of Northumberland, Lindisfarne Castle is only accessible via a three mile causeway at low tide. The causeway is covered by sea twice daily, so visitors are warned to check safe causeway crossing times in advance to ensure access to the island. For drivers, tide times are displayed at both ends of the causeway. Lindisfarne is a romantic 16th century castle, although the site was originally a Tudor fort , it is a one mile walk from the car park along a tarmac road and cobbled path. Admission to the castle costs £6.95 for adults and £3.50 for children, visitors should research tide times and severe weather warnings in advance to get the most out of this historic day trip.

2) Clumber Park, Nottinghamshire, East Midlands

For a cost effective and active day out with spectacular views, pack your bike in your car and drive to Clumber Park in Nottinghamshire. With 3,800 acres of gardens, parkland and woodland to explore and 20 miles of picturesque cycle routes , visitors can easily spend a whole day enjoying the great outdoors. There’s plenty of open space for other activities too, with some visitors setting up cricket matches in the summer. Parking is just £5 for the day and entry to Clumber Park is free, facilities include toilets, a cafe and cycle hire.
3) Arne nature reserve, Dorset

The RSPB managed Arne nature reserve in Dorset is home to almost 500 types of flowering plant and is known for its lowland heathland and oak woodland. Wildlife includes British reptile, Dartford warblers, nightjars and many species of moth, dragonfly and butterfly . The reserve overlooks Poole Harbour where visitors can watch birdlife including wading birds, ducks and geese, black tailed godwits, brent geese and avocets . Parking is available next to the reserve, entry is £4 per car for a whole day and is free for RSPB members. With the nearest train station a four mile walk away and the closest bus stop three miles from the reserve, this really is a destination best accessed by car.
4) The Lizard Peninsula and Kynance Cove

For beautiful views and a taste of British history, visit the Lizard Peninsula (the most southerly point of British mainland), home to the ‘Lizard wireless station’ where some of the first wireless radio experiments were held . The secluded Kynance Cove is just two miles north of Lizard Village, visit at low tide when a sandy beach is revealed . As well as the picturesque views, visitors can enjoy walks along the coastline. Local facilities include parking, food vendors and public toilets.

5) The Seven Sisters sheep centre, Sussex

Visit the Seven Sisters sheep centre, situated in the South Downs national park and housed in a 17th century barn. This family run farm specialises in sheep breeding, with over 40 different breeds, as well as other farm animals including pigs, goats, rabbits and chicks . A child-friendly day out, visitors can feed the animals, see lambs and sheep being shorn and milked, watch wool being spun and learn about cheese making. Parking is available on site and the farm is wheelchair accessible , with toilets and a picnic area available. Admission is budget friendly, at just £5 for adults and £4 for children. Located just one mile from Beachy Head, finish your afternoon with a cliff top walk enjoying scenic views out to sea.

Facebook scheduling, Twitter Lists, HootSuite & more

Every day there are new online tools being touted as the newest, greatest thing sure to make your social media life easy. To help, I’ve summarized a few that make my social media life easier – and hopefully yours, too!

Facebook scheduling: Pick your time to shine
1If you use Facebook as your primary social media outlet, then you should take advantage of the scheduling feature Facebook recently introduced. It’s very simple to use. Enter your post, then click on the little clock icon. Select the day and time you’d like your text to post and hit schedule. So far, this is one of my favorite tools – I’ve used it quite a bit and have not run into any issues with it working properly.
Tip: The scheduling feature only works on pages, not personal profiles, and does not work with sharing someone else’s post. I hope this is something Facebook will implement in the near future.

Twitter lists: Focus on those who matter
2When you click to view a Twitter list, you’ll see a stream of tweets from only the users included in that group. The nice thing is that you don’t have to be following a Twitter user to add them to your list. This is a great way to cut through the hundreds of tweets in your stream and narrow it down to just those you really want to see.
Tip: To create a list, go to your Twitter home page and click the profile drop-down icon in the top navigation bar. To add someone to your list, go to their profile and click on the drop-down icon of the little person (next to the Follow/Following button).

Google Reader: Make the Web come to you
3. Google Reader is a free service from Google that uses RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds. RSS feeds offer a simplified view of Web content down to just text, pictures and videos — minus the site’s style and formatting, which can sometimes hinder or befuddle casual reading. When you want to do a quick scan of your favorite sites, this is a real time saver.
Tip: Nearly every site has an RSS feed, and you can usually find it by scrolling around and hunting for the little RSS logo, a little orange box with three white waves.

HootSuite: Manage your accounts in one place
4I’ve long been a huge fan of HootSuite and other third-party schedulers, like Tweetdeck. The service lets you post to several different social media platforms from one site. The dashboard lets you monitor those same platforms in an easy-to-view format.
Tip: At the free level, you can add up to five social media platforms, which is enough for most people. Once you begin to use HootSuite as your team’s social media dashboard, expect to pay $5 to $15 per month per additional team member.

One month and nearly 30,000 miles after they set off from Washington, D.C., en route to Seattle, five teams competing in the Best of the Road contest — sponsored by Rand McNally in collaboration with USA TODAY — have turned in their maps and car keys, consulted with a panel of judges and come up with the winners: five small American towns full of friendly people, great scenery, terrific food, patriotic fervor and just plain fun.

Selected from 30 nominees (each team visited the six in their category), the winners were announced Tuesday at the Destination Marketing Association International's annual meeting in Seattle.

MOST BEAUTIFUL 

Bardstown, Ky.

Team that visited:  Nikki and Dusty Green ("Two for the Road") from Spicewood, Texas, who were also the winning team.

What made it stand out:  "Bourbon is Bardstown's history and tradition and the countryside is beautiful, but we probably got fewer scenic shots in Bardstown than anywhere else," admit the Greens about their visit to central Kentucky's Bluegrass Country. Instead, they say, "the people turned us around. We realized maybe we're not just here to see mountains and rivers, maybe there's something else. Our hearts are still in this place."

Don't miss:  "Definitely the distilleries," the Greens say, where visitors can "learn about the history and heritage of bourbon, and the pride and love that goes into making Kentucky's signature spirit." Another high point: My Old Kentucky Home State Park, site of a former plantation built in 1795. The mansion was the supposed inspiration for the official state song, "My Old Kentucky Home," sung every year before the running of the Kentucky Derby.

Biggest surprise:  "The town itself," the Greens say. "We'd never heard of it and honestly didn't expect to find much there," but were smitten by downtown's "classic Norman Rockwell" look and feel.

What made it stand out:  This North Texas town, with its restored, late-19th-century downtown, "changed our definition of patriotism," the team says. "It's not just the number of flags or monuments, memorials or programs; it's not even just for the people who serve. It's how you care for the people who were fought for."

Don't miss:  Antique shopping and lunch at Sarah's on the Square for "contemporary comfort food," and a stop at the intimate, 30-acre Frank Buck Zoo to feed giraffes or mingle with flamingos. The Shady Lady, a former saloon and brothel in the heart of downtown, is now a B&B with such unique furnishings as a six-foot copper tub.

Biggest surprise:  Gainesville is the USA's only "Medal of Honor Host City," and their annual spring celebration — conceived in 2001 as a way to honor veterans —draws Congressional Medal of Honor recipients from around the country, with volunteer donations covering recipients' travel and food expenses.

Don't miss:  Coyote Cafe and Anasazi Restaurant, both of which "stir the senses and tantalize the taste buds with a presentation that make you want to break out your camera. The lamb with mole, roasted leeks and purple potatoes at Anasazi, and the fillet of beef with vegetable crepe, tempura asparagus and veal with demi-glaze at Coyote Cafe were simply spectacular."

Biggest surprise:  The all-out reverence for chiles, which Santa Fe chefs "seem to use in just about everything…from breakfast, lunch and dinner to desserts and even drinks. Be prepared for the question 'red, or green?' and if you answer 'Christmas,' you'll get both."

But it also "feels like home in Murray more than anywhere else," Jordan and Schatz say. Its residents "had a way of bringing you in, and we made friends. This is the only town where we went into people's homes."

Don't miss:  Created by a dam on the Tennessee River, 184-mile-long Kentucky Lake is lined with campsites and state and private marinas that rent houseboats, pontoons, sailboats and other craft.

Biggest surprise:  The scenic campus of basketball-crazed Murray State University— home of the "shoe tree," where college alumni who met their sweethearts at school return to attach one shoe from each partner.

"You can be a yogi beach bunny one minute, on a boat crusing the marina the next, then get your taste of great locally-sourced grub decked out in a dress you got at one of the many awesome vintage stores before you hit one of the town's night spots," the team says.

Don't miss:  Kevro's Art Bar, an "authentic, intimate and creative space that harbors arts of all kinds," and the free Delray Downtowner, a door-to-door, eco-friendly golf cart service.

Biggest surprise:  Delray is "a great snorkeling and scuba diving destination," Serrano and Haas say, with a century-old steamship sunk in shallow water and some of the best visibility on the East Coast.
